Congratulations

Congratulations on investing in a Ferris Cat Exercise Wheel. It’s a fantastic way to enrich your cat’s environment, encourage natural exercise, and support their physical and mental wellbeing.

The good news is that most cats require little or no training and will begin using the wheel naturally once they become familiar with it. Every cat is different, so patience is the key to success.

Choosing the Right Location

Where you position the wheel can make a difference during the introduction period.

Many cats prefer to have a clear escape route when investigating something new, so we recommend placing the wheel in an open area with space around it rather than close to walls, furniture, or patio doors.

Let Your Cat Adjust

Introducing the wheel gradually is one of the most important parts of the process.

For the first few days, simply assemble the wheel and allow your cat to investigate it in their own time. Avoid encouraging or pressuring them to use it straight away. Some cats will approach within hours, while others may take several days before they feel confident enough to investigate.

A useful tip is to assemble the wheel but leave it off the base, resting flat on the floor for a few days. This allows your cat to become familiar with its appearance and scent without it being a large moving object.

You can also place a few favourite toys inside the wheel so your cat begins to associate it with positive experiences before it is fully assembled.

Encouraging Your Cat

If, after around four days, your cat hasn’t started exploring the wheel, you can begin gentle encouragement.

Every cat has a different motivator. You may find success using:

  • A laser pointer
  • A favourite toy
  • A piece of string or wand toy
  • A small food treat (best used only if other methods aren’t successful)

If using a laser pointer, keep the light on the running surface directly in front of your cat, rather than higher up the wheel. This encourages natural walking rather than jumping, helping your cat build confidence while the wheel begins to move.

Praise your cat for every positive step, no matter how small. The goal is to create positive experiences rather than fast progress.

Allow Your Cat to Learn at Their Own Pace

As your cat gains confidence, they will gradually learn how the wheel moves.

Avoid encouraging them to run too fast during the early stages. Most cats take around two weeks to develop the coordination needed to speed up and slow down the wheel confidently.

During this learning period, ensure there are no nearby objects that could pose a hazard if your cat exits the wheel unexpectedly.

Important

Never pick up your cat and place them on the wheel yourself.

Although well intended, this can frighten your cat, create a negative association with the wheel, and significantly delay or even prevent successful training.

If this has already happened and your cat is now avoiding the wheel, please contact us. We can offer advice to help rebuild your cat’s confidence and restart the introduction process.

If Your Cat Is Nervous of the Moving Wheel

Some cats are comfortable exploring the wheel but become unsure once it begins to move.

If this happens:

  • Hold the wheel still while your cat investigates.
  • Encourage them to step onto it using a favourite toy or a few treats.
  • Offer plenty of calm verbal praise.
  • Repeat this over several days until your cat appears relaxed.

Once your cat is comfortable standing on the wheel, allow it to move only very slowly while continuing to reward calm behaviour. Building confidence gradually will produce much better long-term results than trying to rush the process.

Be Patient

Every cat learns at their own pace.

Some begin using the wheel within a day or two, while others may take several weeks. Both are completely normal. There are even cats that don’t discover the wheel until several months after it has been introduced.

The most important thing is to allow your cat to progress at their pace, not yours.

If your cat is still not using the wheel after six weeks, despite following these tips, please get in touch. We have additional advice that has helped many more cautious cats gain confidence and start enjoying their wheel.

With patience, encouragement and positive experiences, most cats go on to use their Ferris Cat Exercise Wheel happily and independently for years to come.

If you need any advice during the training process, we’re always happy to help. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. FantasticCatsUK@gmail.com. We want both you and your cat to enjoy the experience.

HAPPY WHEELING!
